The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today the third annual Hockey Day in Michigan will take place February 16, 2008. The CCHA, FSN Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association are teaming up to bring a coast-to-coast celebration of the sport of hockey to participants and fans across the state. Events Around the State
- Former Spartan Great and 15-year NHL veteran Kelly Miller will be dropping Friday’s ceremonial first puck prior to the Western Michigan at Michigan State match-up. The Miller family name is synonymous with Spartan Hockey. Since 1956, 10 Miller family members have laced up their skates for Michigan State. Western Michigan junior forward Jeff LoVecchio and Michigan State senior forward Bryan Lerg will also participate in the puck drop.
- The third annual Grand Traverse Hockey Association Skillympics Games will be held February 16th at the Centre Ice Arenas in Traverse City from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Immediately following the games, the GTHA and Centre Ice are teaming up to provide a free “Taste of Hockey” program for skaters to come out and experience the great game of hockey. The program includes free skate rental and instruction from local coaches. House players, each representing their team, will be competing in a full day of intense competition in the five individual skill areas that define great hockey players: skating, passing, shooting, goaltending and speed. Following a dazzling opening ceremony and parade of athletes, players participate in skating, passing and shooting events. Goaltending and team speed events round out the competition. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for each event are presented in a moving medals ceremony. The GTHA Skillympics are underwritten by Textron Cone Drive in Traverse City.
- "Have Fun, Play Hockey" clinics at Suburban Ice – Macomb and Novi Ice Arena.
- Two college hockey games will be televised on FSN Detroit, including Michigan State at Western Michigan at 4:35 p.m. and Lake Superior at Michigan at 7:35 p.m.
- The Motor City Chiefs will offer free admission to their game on Sunday, Feb. 17 against the Cleveland Lumberjacks. The game begins at 1:20 p.m. at the Canfield Ice Arena at 2100 Kinloch Street, Dearborn Heights, MI 48127; (313) 561-1960. The Dearborn Heights Hockey Association will also participate in a shootout during an intermission.
- The Oakland Jr. Grizzlie Hockey Club and Big Boy Restaurants present "Bring Your Friend to the Rink Day" on Saturday, Feb. 16 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Troy Sports Center Grizzlie Rink 1. Equipment will be supplied by MAHA D3 while instruction will be provided by the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies coaching staff for those friends who would like to try hockey.
- Suburban Ice - Macomb is hosting a "Have Fun, Play Hockey" clinic. Those interested must pre-register by going online to CCHA.com. The arena is also holding a 955 SK8 Jamz Live DJ Open Skate. Skaters that wear their favorite hockey jersey will receive half off admission! Former Detroit Red Wing forward Ted Lindsay will be signing autographs - time still to be determined. There is also a family skate night presented by Representative Kim Meltzer from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. and free admission with donation of canned goods or nonperishable food items to support local food bands. Monetary donations will also be accepted for the Macomb Food program.
- Novi Ice Arena will host a Skills Competition featuring fastest skater, accuracy shooting and hardest shot for players at the Mite through Bantam age groups from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in addition to the "Have Fun, Play Hockey" clinic from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants must be pre-registered. Online registration is available at CCHA.com. If you wear a jersey to the public skate (3 p.m. - 4:50 p.m.), you will receive $1 off admission!
- The Detroit Hockey Association is hosting Hockey in the Hood Weekend Feb. 15-17, 2008. This is the first minority hockey tournament that features many different hockey programs from the NHL's Diversity Task Force. The Stanley Cup will be available on Friday (Feb. 15) for photos and viewing at the Jack Adams Arena. On Saturday (Feb. 16), the tournament starts at 7 am and action continues until 5:30 p.m. The opening ceremonies will honor the 50th anniversary of Willie O'Ree breaking the color barrier as the first black player in the NHL on January 18, 1958. The annual HITH Dinner/Auction will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Detroit Marriott Reniassance Center and will feature NHL, NBA and NFL memorabilia. The tournament wraps up Sunday, when the day begins with the All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast and more tournament games. The Championship games will be held at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Games will be played at the Jack Adams Arena, Michigan State Fairgrounds and the University of Michigan-Dearborn Ice Arena.
- Cutting Edge Hockey Academy & Hazel Park Learn to Skate Program will offer free skating lessons for beginners and a skills program for intermediate and advance from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Hazel Park Ice Arena. Instructors will be provided by Cutting Edge Hockey Academy. Cutting Edge Hockey Academy is associated with Team Michigan AAA & the Great Rampage along with Hazel Park Figure Skating Club. Skates and helmets will be available.
- The Plymouth District Library will host a special speaker presentation on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Located in downtown Plymouth at 223 S. Main Street, the Library is proud of showcase three pioneers of hockey: Al Renfrew, Tom Mustonen and Raymond Rolak. They will share tales of the University of Michigan and Michigan State hockey rivalry, old-time Detroit hockey and never before heard stories of the early days of international hockey. Coach Al Renfrew had a chronicled career as a player, coach and administrator at the University of Michigan, including NCAA Championships as both player and coach. Native Detroiter Tom Mustonen came from a hockey family, starred at Michigan State University and played for the USA National team in the 1963 World Tournament in Sweden, continuing on a career as educator and coach. Broadcaster and author Raymond Rolak has been involved with hockey as a player, administrator and coach, and with international aspects of the sport. Hockey Day in Michigan at the Plymouth District Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Registration is requested at (734) 453-0750.
- The Grand Rapids Griffins will host a Cross-Ice Hockey Jamboree at Van Andel Arena from noon – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. More than 300 kids from 10 West Michigan hockey associations will play throughout the day before attending our game against the Milwaukee Admirals at 7 p.m. Cross-ice hockey will also be featured during the second intermission of our game and numerous uniformed youth hockey players will be involved in the Griffins game that night, from skating alongside the Grand Rapids players during pre-game introductions to assisting in on-ice promotions.
- The Marquette Jr. Hockey and Marquette Sr. High School are sponsoring a number of events to celebrate Hockey Day. At 1 p.m., the MSHS Redmen will be hosting the Soo High School hockey team. Free admission to the MSHS game will be available to all MSHA students by obtaining a ticket at their school's office. Students are encouraged to wear a hockey jersey to the game. Immediately after the game, Marquette Jr. Hockey is sponsoring two hours of free skating. Between 3 p.m. – 4 p.m., it will be "Skate with the Redmen". There will also be open skating between 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. A blood drive will take place at Lakeview Arena between 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the front of the arena. The Marquette American Legion Sentinels Bantam AA hockey team is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner between 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post on Bluff St. in Marquette. Meals include spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert and drink at $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Take-out is available. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling (906) 869-4060.
- The Greater Battle Creek Ice Hockey Association is hosting a weekend of hockey celebrations at The Rink (75 Houston Street; Battle Creek, MI). On Friday, Feb. 15, All-Star Festivities run from 6 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 16, the Adray West Mite Playoffs get underway with the first and second rounds, running 8 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. On Sunday, the mite playoff games continue with a match-up between the KWings alumni facing off against the GBCIHA coaches at 12:30 p.m. and a city open skate at 4 p.m. For an extended schedule, please click here.

- The Taylor Sportsplex will make you have hockey on the brain when you step into our facility. We will have over seven Bubble Hockey machines throughout the arena all set on FREE play! We also turn out lobby into the biggest Mini Stick game around with our giant inflatable rink. That evening the Taylor Unified Varsity Hockey Team will face New Boston Huron; all kids wearing a hockey jersey get in for free. During the first intermission, the kids from our Tot-Hockey and I-Program class will participate in a shoot out. When you purchase your ticket to the high school game, it also gets you into a special public skate immediately following where you get the chance to skate with the T.U. Team. If it's hockey gear you are looking for, we also have our 2nd Annual Zamboni Sale (no we are not selling zamboni's). Every time the Zamboni is on the ice, everything in the pro shop is 40% off.
- The Garden City Hockey Association is celebrating Hockey Weekend Across America with the following schedule of events. On Friday, Feb. 15, Wear Your Jersey to School Day – Garden City Hockey Association players are encouraged to wear their jersey to school to "show your colors" and let your friends know that you play the great game of hockey. On Saturday, Feb. 16, Bring A Friend to the Rink Day – All GCHA players are encouraged to bring a friend to the Garden City Civic Ice Arena for open skating from 1:00 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. If you wear your current GCHA hockey jersey, you will get in free of charge along with one friend. Skate rental fees still apply. There is also a district playoff game. The Midget A Gold Wings will have a home game at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, the first-ever GCHA Youth Skills Competition featuring players in the Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget age groups are welcome to sing up for this event taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Skills include: Accurate Shooter, Fastest Skater, Puck Control Relay among others. The Bantam B Stars have a home game immediately following the Skills Competition and the Midget B Stars have a home game at 6:30 p.m.
- On Hockey Day in Michigan, nine will be the number worth noting at Westland's Mike Modano Ice Arena. Anyone bearing the number nine on a jersey, hat or any other Mike Modano memorabilia at the arena during Open Skate from 1 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. will get in free. Nine is the jersey number of Dallas Stars Center Mike Modano, the all-time goal-scoring and points leader amongst American-born players in the NHL who was also raised in Westland. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), FSN Detroit, Detroit Red Wings, RBK hockey and Perani's Hockey World are providing the opportunity for boys and girls ages 5-11 to experience the excitement of playing organized hockey for the first time at no charge. Sign up for a "Have Fun, Play Hockey Clinic" at one of the CCHA home arenas or one of the Metro-Detroit locations. Equipment will be provided to all participants and professional instructors will be teaching the clinic. Boys and girls ages 5-11 are getting the chance to learn to play hockey for free in CCHA member school locations as well as local arenas throughout the state of Michigan between December and February as part of the Hockey Day in Michigan celebration. An hour of group and one-on-one ice drills teaching the fundamentals of the game sent participants home with big smiles and an urge to continue to play the game that over 70,000 players in Michigan are already playing.
