Five Former CCHA Players Participating in IIHF World Championships
May 13, 2008 Five former CCHA players are participating in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Quebec City, Quebec, from May 2-18. Team Canada has three former CCHA'ers including Chris Kunitz (Ferris State), Jamal Mayers (Western Michigan) and Duncan Keith (Michigan State). Kunitz has one goal from the 7-0 defeat of Latvia (May 4), two assists against United States (May 6) and a third assist vs. Germany (May 10). Mayers picked up an assist in Canada's shutout of Latvia, contributed a goal and another assist against Germany and added another assist vs. Finland (May 12). Keith posted his first point of the tournament in the team's first game, a 5-1 victory against Slovenia (May 2). Team Canada has defeated Slovenia, 5-1; Latvia, 7-0; USA, 5-4 and Norway, 2-1, Germany, 10-1 and Finland, 6-3. The Canadians will face Norway on May 14 at 3:30 p.m. EST in Halifax. Former Spartan David Booth is the lone ex-CCHA player on Team USA. Booth scored the fourth goal of a 5-1 win over Slovenia on May 4. The United States are 4-2 in the World Championships, beating Latvia, 4-0; Slovenia, 5-1, Germany, 6-4 and Norway, 9-1. Team USA lost to Canada, 5-4 and Finland, 3-2. Next up for Team USA is Finland on May 14 at 7:15 p.m. EST. Team Italy also has a former conference player in Andre Signoretti, who played at Ohio State from 1997-01. Signoretti has three assists including one against Denmark (May 4), Czech Republic (May 6) and France (May 9). The former Buckeye scored his only goal in five games against France (May 10). With no wins, Team Italy is out of the race for the World Championships after being defeated by France 2-0.
