Alumnus of the Week - Doug Weight
Jan. 14, 2008
Doug Weight Doug Weight scored two goals on three shots and hit a career milestone en route to becoming the CCHA Alumnus of the Week. On Monday the former Laker assisted on a Corey Perry power-play goal in a 5-2 win in Nashville. Two days later, Weight hit a personal milestone in a 5-0 rout of the Maple Leafs. Four minutes after tipping in a power-play goal, he assisted on a Chris Kunitz goal, the 700th helper of his career. He is only the fifth US born player to accomplish that feat. The Detroit native's week concluded in a home game against the Sharks, where he played an integral part in the overtime victory. He scored on a slapshot with under 30 seconds left in the game to knot the score at three. The Ducks won early in the overtime period. In two seasons at Lake State, he ripped 144 points in 88 games. His 69-point freshman campaign earned him a spot on the CCHA All-Rookie team and the Lakers finished in second place in both the regular season and CCHA playoffs. His sophomore year saw him register 75 points, leading Lake Superior to regular-season and playoff championships. He was recognized on the CCHA All-Conference team, the CCHA All-Tournament team and was a Second Team All-American. Weight made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers and has since played over a decade and a half with Edmonton, St Louis and Carolina. In 1995-96 he tallied a career-high 104 points on the season with the Oilers. He has 263 goals and 963 points in 1106 NHL games.
