22 CCHA players picked in 2007 NHL draft

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association placed 21 players from eight different schools in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in Columbus, Ohio, including two first-round draft picks, Notre Dame bound defenseman Ian Cole to St.Louis and Michigan recruit Max Pacioretty to Montreal. It marks the seventh straight season that at least a pair of players with CCHA ties having been taken in the first round and gives the conference 16 first-round selections during that period.

Two more incoming freshmen were selected in the second round as St. Louis selected Michigan forward Aaron Palushaj and Washington took Irish defenseman Ted Ruth.

Ryan Thang, a 2006 CCHA All-Rookie Team performer for Notre Dame, was selected in the third round, 81st overall, by Nashville with Buffalo selecting forward Corey Tropp, who is headed to national champion Michigan State, with the 89th pick and Buffalo getting Michigan recruit Louie Caporusso one slot later.

Four more players who will become CCHA freshmen this fall became the property of NHL teams in round six. Alain Goulet (Nebraska-Omaha) was drafted by Boston, Pat Maroon (Ferris State) was selected by Philadelphia, Sweden’s Carl Hagelin (Michigan) was taken by the New York Rangers with John Albert (Ohio State) picked by Atlanta. Proceedings came to a close in the seventh round with Philadelphia landing Notre Dame goalie recruit Brad Phillips, Calgary selecting Ohio State freshman-to-be C.J. Severyn and Florida opting for Western Michigan bound Ryan Watson.
